Most memorable moment at Idaho State University

A career memorable moment Fred recalls vividly occurred during his first semester at ISU. The wrestling coach was tragically killed in an accident and the university was faced with the decision of whether to drop the wrestling program. This was a very historic time in ISU history as it was the height of the Vietnam War. When the decision was made not to drop wrestling but to continue the vision of developing the sport, it was evident that ISU was blessed with strong and ethical leaders like President William E. "Bud" Davis, Athletic Directors Milton (Dubby) Holt, and Italo I.J. "Babe" Caccia. What these individuals taught studnet-athletes was commitment to a vision and a sense of responsibilty toward others. This was Idaho State Universidy during 1964-1968. What made these Idaho State teams special is that they were, perhaps, some of the last NCAA Division I teams in the nation to embrace the true meaning of a student-athlete. These teams were known for their academic achievements, as well as the conference championships. These teams produced individuals with PhD’s, Master’s degrees, a police chief, professor/college administrators, military officers, Navy pilots, YMCA and business executives, and wrestling coaches/teachers. It was truly a student/athlete team who valued learning as well as sport.
